Mas Selamat Katari On The Loose

In case you do not know what has happened, here's the news article extracted from Channel NewsAsia

SINGAPORE : A massive police operation is underway in Singapore after the leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah network here, Mas Selamat Kastari, escaped from detention at 4.05pm on Wednesday.

A statement from the Home Affairs Ministry says Mas Selamat walks with a limp and is presently at large.

He is not known to be armed and is one of Singapore's most wanted men.

Extensive police resources have been deployed to track him down after he escaped from the Whitley Road Detention Centre.

Anyone with information about him can contact the police at 999.

Mas Selamat was arrested by the Indonesian police on Bintan island in January 2006.

He was picked up then for using a fake identity card.

Based on investigations then, Indonesia's elite anti-terror police discovered he was the leader of the Singapore Jemaah Islamiyah network, a terrorist organisation.

They then deported the man to Singapore in 2006.

The 45-year-old father of four was also said to be involved in JI's plans to mount attacks against foreign and local establishments here.

These included the US Embassy and American Club, the Defence Ministry headquarters at Bukit Gombak and the Education Ministry building at North Buona Vista Drive.

Mas Selamat fled Singapore in December 2001 following an Internal Security Department operation against the terrorist organisation.

The militant leader had been on the run after Singapore authorities discovered plans to crash seven truck filled with bombs at various locations around the island.

Investigations also revealed that he was the mastermind behind a plan to hijack an airplane and crash it into Changi airport.

When he was last arrested in Indonesia, officers found literature on bomb making on the man.

Mas Selamat's deportation to Singapore two years ago was seen as a significant development in the close network of cooperation amongst intelligence officers in the region to share information on terror suspects and to defeat the terror threat.

The islandwide manhunt has fanned out to areas in Beauty World in Upper Bukit Timah and Goldhill Avenue near Barker Road.

Officers are also knocking on homes asking residents if they have seen the escapee.

Police have also formed a formidable blockade around Malcolm Park, near the Singapore Chinese Girls' School. - CNA/ch

How did he actually escape from the detention center? Nobody knows.

I foresee that the Singapore police might not be able to capture him again. Think about this. He was on the run from 2001 to 2006, and the reason he got caught was because he was using a fake identity card, and it was by the Indonesian police! Not because the Singapore police went out to catch him personally!

So what if he is unarmed, short and walks with a limp? There are many people in Singapore who are like that. And these people are experts in the art of makeover. They can easily disguise themselves as another person.

Honestly, even if he did not, I wouldn't have recognised him if he was sitting beside me on the bus or the train. He looks just like any other Malay guys we see on the streets.

If the news was the headlines, and that the TV repeats this story as many times as they repeating Singapore winning the bid for the Youth Olympics, then probably Singaporeans will take note.

But for now, we can only hope for the best. Let's hope he gets caught quickly, otherwise it's going to have a bad influence on Singapore, especially right after we won the bid for the Youth Olympics. Let's do our part to keep a lookout when we're out on the streets. Who knows? You might be the one who sees him.

Here's his face:

Edited at 10.36pm:
Apparently there has been a security lapse at Whitley Detention Centre that led to the escape of Mas Selamat Katari. And also, he escaped at 4.05pm, but it took some time before the public got to know about it. Why the time lag?

Since he was unarmed, shouldn't they immediately inform the public in order to ask them for assistance in case they spot him? Why hide it from the public?

Fruitful Life

Spent the morning teaching as usual. Spent the entire afternoon doing my assignment, and now at 10pm, I'm still doing my assignment, and I guess this routine won't stop until April.

Been a while since I last did so many things in one day, until I don't even have the time to eat dinner. Suddenly think that life is so much better if you are doing something meaningful and useful constantly, rather than sitting down on the couch and channel surfing while munching on snacks.

Do you have a fruitful life? Or are you just wasting your life away?

New Blog. New Start

New blog.

New start.

Time for updates!

Grandmother Passed Away
My grandmother has passed away in January, and I want to take this opportunity to thanks those who have shown care and concern for me and my family. Especially Dear. Thank you so much for taking the entire week off to help me out in the preparations for the funeral.

Now that my grandmother is gone, the entire house has turned really quiet. Gone are the sound of fishes frying, the sound of her shouting at the dogs to stop barking, and the sound of the Cantonese shows that she always watch when she's home.

But no matter what, I will have to get used to it.

Assignments
My bloody school assignments are killing me, and to make things worse, the percentage of the assignment is just 15% of the entire year!

Stupid UOL. Stupid-er me to choose this course.

Chinese New Year
A very quiet CNY for me this year, due to the death of my grandmother. But still able to collect a few hong baos, and spend lots of quality time with my Dear. Simple and nice. I like.

Valentine's Day
Bought Ferrero Rocher from someone overseas for Dear. Of course, it's different from the ones that are sold in Singapore. It's all dark chocolate, which is her fav!

Buying Car
Finally, my family is going to have our first car! A Toyota Vios G-1.5L! Gonna go book a test drive and pay for it this coming Sunday. So excited!

"Cher!"
Yes. I'm now a part time IT trainer at CCKSS, teaching Macromedia Flash, Macromedia Dreamweaver and Microsoft Access. I asked the students to greet me as Mr. Calvin, but they end up calling me "CHER!"

And in case you're wondering how on earth I can be a teacher in that school with my not-so-dark coloured hair, I have to use the temporary black colour Gatsby hair spray from Guardian every single morning before I go and teach! Not forgetting to remove the necklaces and the earrings. At least I get to keep my rings, and claim for the hair spray, which costs SGD11.30 for 1 bloody small bottle!!!!!

I'm back.
